Part I

My friend Dorothy at The Pen and Barbell invited me to join in #The100DayProject put on by The Great Discontent, which was to start Monday, April 6. As usual, my initial reaction was something along the lines of “Aint no one got time for that!” but thankfully my competitive spirit prevailed and I rose to the challenge. The nature of my life does not allow me to create something new every day and also have time to sleep at night so I chose to use the time to create a large scale work that would double as my 2015 ArtPrize submission.

Before starting the project I was not sure what I would submit for ArtPrize this year, but I knew I wanted to work in the style of the Architecture Series. I’ve chosen to create a large artwork (22″Hx28″W) of part of downtown Grand Rapids from a photo I took on my trip there to attend the opening weekend of my first ArtPrize, in 2013, where I was privileged to exhibit Golden Gate Bridge at WestCoast Coffee. The great thing about whittling away at it every day is the ability to better see and document the process. And, the kids saw my t-square and asked me why I have a pick ax. That was pretty awesome.

The pencil portion of the artwork is fairly light so not ideal for taking photos, but hopefully you can “get the picture”.
